WHAT CAUSES SWIRL MARKS ON YOUR CAR & HOW TO REMOVE THEM

Swirl marks are those fine circular scratches you see on your car's paint when light hits it at certain angles — especially noticeable on dark-coloured cars. They're incredibly common, but the good news is they're almost entirely avoidable. Here's what causes them and what to do about them.

THE MOST COMMON CAUSES

• Automatic car washes — the spinning brushes are the biggest culprit. They trap grit and grind it across the paint surface repeatedly.
• Improper hand washing — using a single dirty bucket, wringing out a sponge, or scrubbing with a household cloth all create swirls.
• Drying with a rough towel — dragging a cheap bath towel across your paint drags any remaining grit through the surface.
• Dusting without washing — wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth or duster scratches the surface.
• Low-quality detailing products — abrasive polishes used incorrectly, or cheap polishing pads at the wrong speed.

HOW TO PREVENT SWIRL MARKS

Always use the two-bucket washing method — one bucket for your wash solution and one for rinsing your mitt. Use a quality microfibre wash mitt, not a sponge. Rinse the car thoroughly before touching it to remove loose grit. Dry with a plush microfibre drying towel or a forced-air blower. And avoid automatic car washes entirely.

HOW TO REMOVE EXISTING SWIRL MARKS

Once swirl marks are in the paint, the only way to properly remove them is machine polishing — what we call paint correction. The process involves using a cutting compound to safely level the clear coat surface and remove the scratches, followed by a refining polish to restore gloss.
