BIRD DROPPINGS AND TREE SAP: HOW FAST THEY RUIN PAINT
Most paint damage we correct did not come from a crash or a car park scrape. It came from something organic that sat on the panel for a few days in the sun.
WHY DROPPINGS ARE SO DESTRUCTIVE
Bird droppings are acidic, and they contain grit. Both matter. The acid softens and eats into the clear coat, while the grit means anything you wipe across it drags abrasive material over soft paint.
Heat accelerates all of it. On a hot day, a dropping can begin etching within hours. Two days in Melbourne summer sun is enough to leave a permanent outline that no amount of washing removes.
WHAT TREE SAP DOES DIFFERENTLY
Sap does not eat into paint the way droppings do. It does something more annoying — it hardens into a resin that bonds mechanically to the clear coat.
Eucalypts are everywhere across Melbourne's north, and their sap sets hard and clear, so people often do not notice it until the car is washed and the panel still feels rough.
Picking or scraping hardened sap is how most sap damage actually happens. The sap itself may have caused nothing; the fingernail caused the scratch.
THE RIGHT WAY TO REMOVE BOTH
Soak, do not scrub. Lay a microfibre towel soaked in warm water over the spot and leave it for several minutes. Softening the deposit means it lifts rather than drags.
Lift the towel straight up, taking the deposit with it. Do not wipe side to side.
For sap that will not budge, a dedicated tar and adhesive remover works. Apply it to the towel, not straight onto hot paint, and wash the area afterwards.
If there is still a visible mark once the deposit is gone, the clear coat is etched and it needs machine correction rather than more chemicals.
THE REAL PROTECTION
A ceramic coating gives you a sacrificial layer. The acid attacks the coating instead of the clear coat, and the smoother surface means deposits are far easier to lift off.
It also buys you time, which is what actually matters. A dropping that would have etched bare clear coat in a day might sit on a coated panel for several without permanent damage.
